Import the model of a part and associate the part with a Mech-Vision measurement solution

After you create a Mech-Metrics measurement project, you can import the CAD model of a part. Supported model file formats include STEP, STP, and STL. Once the model is imported, the software will automatically create a corresponding part in the project. You can associate a Mech-Vision measurement solution with the part. Within a single Mech-Metrics measurement project, you can create multiple parts and import a CAD model for each part.

  • A part refers to an individual workpiece that is processed or assembled during production.

  • A CAD model of a part refers to a digital 3D model created using CAD software to represent the shape, dimensions, and other characteristics of a part. The imported CAD model of the part represents all such parts.

  • Fixtures refer to the equipment or devices used to secure and position a part, ensuring its correct location and orientation during manufacturing or assembly processes.

  • Clamping refers to using fixtures to position and secure a part, ensuring its correct location and orientation during manufacturing or assembly processes.

  • Created in Mech-Vision, a Mech-Vision solution is a collection of functional configurations and data for robot, communication, vision processing, and path planning required for a vision application.

  • A Mech-Vision measurement solution refers to a Mech-Vision solution specifically configured for measuring a particular part. When you use Mech-Metrics, you need to associate a part with its Mech-Vision measurement solution.

  • To know the correspondence between Mech-Vision resources and Mech-Metrics resources, see Terms and Concepts.

  • You must configure a Mech-Vision measurement solution in advance before using Mech-Metrics.

Import the Model of a Part

Follow the steps below to import the model:

  1. On the upper-left CAD tab of the Configuration interface of the software, click Import CAD File.

  2. In the Select CAD File dialog box, find the CAD file to import and then click Open.

  3. In the Import Option dialog box, select the additional content to import and then click OK.

  4. The Importing… progress bar will appear. Please wait for the import to complete.

The import process typically takes a few seconds to several minutes, depending on the size of the CAD model and the additional content selected for import. The larger the CAD model and the more additional content selected, the slower the import process will be. Please be patient.
  5. After the import, the Part01 tab will appear on the left side of the Configuration interface. In the CAD and Part sections of the resource tree on the Part01 tab, the imported CAD model and part of the CAD model will appear.

The first created part is named Part01 by default. You can change the part name as needed. You can modify the name using one of the following methods as needed:

    • Right-click Part01 and click Rename.

    • Right-click the part in the Part section of the resource tree on the Part01 tab and click Rename.

Associate a Mech-Vision Measurement Solution

Mech-Metrics can automatically associate a Mech-Vision measurement solution with a part. You can also manually associate a Mech-Vision measurement solution with the part.

Automate the Association of a Mech-Vision Measurement Solution

If a Mech-Vision solution is open and you create a part, Mech-Metrics will automatically associate the opened solution with the created part. This means that if the path in the Solution Path text field of the Mech-Vision Solution section is empty, Mech-Metrics will automatically specify the path of the opened Mech-Vision solution in the Solution Path text field.

Associate a Mech-Vision Measurement Solution

If you need to create multiple parts in the current Mech-Metrics project, Mech-Metrics will not be able to automatically associate a Mech-Vision measurement solution for each part. You can perform the following operations to manually associate a Mech-Vision solution for a part:

  1. In the Part section of the Part01 tab, click the Part01 part. In the parameter panel of the Configuration interface, the Mech-Vision Solution section will appear.

  2. In the Mech-Vision Solution section, choose one of the following methods to perform the association:

    1. Open the Mech-Vision measurement solution of the current part in Mech-Vision. Return to the Mech-Vision Solution section in Mech-Metrics and click Get Current Solution Path from Mech-Vision.

    2. In the Mech-Vision Solution section, click the folder button to manually find and select the path of the Mech-Vision measurement solution.
